Congressional Leaders Release 2025 Capitol Hill Calendar

Senate Majority Leader-in-waiting John Thune has announced an ambitious schedule to start 2025, with the Senate in session for ten consecutive weeks. The Senate’s packed schedule reflects the anticipated workload, including hearings and votes on President-elect Donald Trump’s nominees. Republicans are also preparing to advance a legislative agenda featuring potentially two budget reconciliation packages—one targeting border security, defense, and energy priorities, and another focused on comprehensive tax reform. The details and plans for this package are still being developed.

Both chambers of Congress will convene on January 3rd, as the Constitution requires, to swear in the new 119th Congress. After the initial 10-week stretch, the Senate will observe a recess starting February 17th for Presidents Day, followed by its first full recess the week of March 17th, aligning with the House’s schedule.

Both chambers will have a two-week recess in mid-April for Easter and Passover. The schedule also shows week-long breaks for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Juneteenth (for the House only), with both chambers observing the traditional August recess. Lawmakers are slated to return for three work weeks in September, with a recess the week of September 21st for Rosh Hashana, just before the end of the fiscal year and the federal funding deadline. Sessions will continue through September 30th.

In the year’s final quarter, the Senate has a scheduled mid-October recess for Columbus Day, while the House will resume work that Tuesday. November includes two recesses for Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. The legislative session is set to conclude on December 19, 2025, for the Senate, one day after the House adjourns.
