Miami International Airport Breaks Ground on $136 Million Park 6 Garage as Part of $7 Billion “MIA, the Next Chapter” Capital Improvement Program
On February 20, 2024, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, along with county commissioners and leaders from Miami International Airport (MIA) and more, marked the commencement of the Park 6 garage project, adding 2,240 parking spaces. This seven-level parking facility represents a $136 million investment, part of MIA’s $7 billion “MIA, the Next Chapter” capital improvement program, aimed at preparing MIA for a projected influx of 77 million travelers and four million tons of freight by 2040. 
Miami-Dade County Mayor Danielle Levine-Cava remarked, “This major investment into the customer experience at MIA will make parking and entering the airport more convenient than ever before. The new Park 6 garage will create more availability in our Dolphin and Flamingo garages while also expanding parking on the south side of the airport. With one modernization project after another, MIA is getting future-ready for our growing number of visitors.”
A $547 million contract with Florida Power & Light Services will fund electric vehicle charging stations, energy-efficient LED lighting, a Parksmart Silver Certification, net-zero backup power generators, and zero-emissions equipment. A further $130 million is allocated for installing solar-power-generating panels and renovating the terminal roof, as outlined in Miami-Dade County’s Sustainable Buildings Program and Climate Action Strategy.
The capital improvement project will also invest in renovating all 126 passenger loading bridges. The first 32 are already in place; the rest will be scheduled for completion each year through 2028. These bridges incorporate glass for cooler temperatures and aesthetic appeal. MIA’s restroom facilities will receive $101 million to renovate 207 restrooms. The first phase of upgrades is complete, with additional renovations scheduled through 2030.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law allocated $400 million to the county for transportation improvements, encompassing Miami International Airport (MIA), and an additional $27 million specifically for MIA, designated for the rehabilitation of the Skytrain people mover system and the modernization of the central terminal.
