This week, White House officials announced that President Biden would not veto a Republican-led measure to end the national COVID emergency, despite having expressed strong objections earlier this year.
White House officials said that when the House Republicans were first preparing to vote on the COVID emergency-ending bill at the start of the year, it would have lifted the national emergency declaration in February. But now, according to the Administration, it’s much closer to the White House’s plan to wind down the COVID federal emergency status on May 11th.
The legislation is a simple one-line measure saying that the national emergency declared on March 13, 2020, is “hereby terminated.” President Donald Trump declared a national emergency concerning COVID-19 in March 2020, granting the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) emergency authority to “temporarily waive or modify certain requirements of the Medicare, Medicaid, and State Children’s Health Insurance programs” throughout the emergency declaration.
